Great question, so many of my patients want to know what the deal is with wisdom teeth. Why did we get them, why don't they fit? It is important to realize that G-d gave us these for a reason. To get them taken out!! Really the short answer is that we as humans have evolved, our jaws have gotten less pronounced and the rougher diet of early humans allowed for more wear of the teeth which allowed our third molars to come into position. We now have these extra teeth that just don't fit. I tell my patients that there is about a 25% chance that a wisdom tooth is going to cause you a problem at some point, (usually while on vacation or during the holidays). Because we can't predict which wisdom tooth is going to be the problem the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons has performed hundreds of studies that support removing wisdom teeth during young adulthood. Sometimes I myself wonder what would happen if I would have left my wisdom teeth in my mouth. A quick search of wisdom tooth on twitter quickly sends me back to reality, when I see all of these people in such agony for days writing about their wisdom teeth causing pain.
