Almost all patients come to the dental office with some form of dental fear and anxiety. I certaintly understand and empathize with my patients in Libertyville Illinois. Personally visiting the dentist is not on the top of my favorite things to do. However, there are some amazing tricks and tips to help relieve and even eliminate the fear and anxiety of going to the dentist. New techniques in sedation dentistry are allowing people to have much more comfortable visits at the dentist office even for longer procedures like fixing a broken or painful tooth. Many people are starting to learn and hear about “sedation dentists” through online and print marketing. What does this really mean for our patients in Libertyville and Gurnee and even patients across Lake County and beyond? Their are many forms of sedation from IV and general anesthesia performed by oral surgeons, to oral conscious sedation. Oral conscious sedation is the type of sedation most used by a properly trained general or family dentist. Oral conscious sedation is not sleep dentistry, but rather you will take some common forms of prescription medications that will help you into a deep state of relaxation. Typically these medications will be taken the night before and under the supervision of the doctor taken again right before your dental appointment. You will be able to answer questions, be responsive, and have a level of awareness during the dental procedure. What you can expect is to feel like you are in that state of being just before you fall asleep, if you know the feeling, you tend to answer questions when spoke to, but rarely remember conversations and things you talked about. This is similar to the feeling you will have after leaving the dental office for your visits. You will not quite be aware of exactly what happened, but you will know it was a comfortable experience. How cool would it be to have a dental visit you could so easily forget!
Most dentists advertising as “sedations dentists” are merely dentist providing oral conscious sedation methods to their patients, currently their is no specialty in sedation. It is important to realize that there are no sedation dentists, just dentists trained to perform varying levels of sedation. Training is important, I speak as a graduate of a hospital trained dentist practicing in Libertyville with my father who brings 30 years of experience providing treatment with both IV and oral conscious sedation methods. I would advise patients that have fear of going to the dentist to make sure they are in a comfortable office environment with a dentist that they trust. Sometimes the most important thing between a great experience and a bad experience at the dentist is just that extra few minutes of attention to your needs as a fearful patient. Of course if you are in the Libertyville, Mundelein, Gurnee, Vernon hills, Lake forest and Lake County area please feel free to call or email us with any questions about sedation dentistry. We will be happy to provide a free consultation to make sure that the office is a comforatable fit. Do you have questions about Sedation Dentistry?

Do you let your gums BLEED?
I have been focused on answering questions for the public. Trying to do my best to help people in need doing their own research at home, well now I have a question for you..
My askmydentisttv.com question for the public is why does everyone feel that it is normal to have your gums bleed to light touch?
It came to me today after seeing a patient that had not been in for many years, their gums were swollen, and with just light brushing they bleed like a gunshot wound. I wondered to myself what would happen if your elbows bled from under the skin, every time we brushed them up against the counter. Would we be more likely to run to the doctor? If it became common place would we just disregard it as normal to everyday life? These are the questions of a dentist? I would love to hear your thoughts.
The question is a response to the question I often get asked which is why do my gums bleed?
Look it happens to the best of us, we get caught up in the day to day and forget to take care of ourselves. We have all been trained to brush at least twice daily. Chances are you have heard of flossing, but due to lack of routine, difficulty with that little piece of string, or some other reason patients just plain find it hard to add floss to their daily routine. When the bacteria and plaque sit between the gums they trigger a low grade infection and the response your body has to this infection is to bring blood to the area to help fight the infection.
A brief video I made might help explain what you can do about it.
Good luck!!!

Why do I have to get my wisdom teeth out?
Great question, so many of my patients want to know what the deal is with wisdom teeth. Why did we get them, why don't they fit? It is important to realize that G-d gave us these for a reason. To get them taken out!! Really the short answer is that we as humans have evolved, our jaws have gotten less pronounced and the rougher diet of early humans allowed for more wear of the teeth which allowed our third molars to come into position. We now have these extra teeth that just don't fit. I tell my patients that there is about a 25% chance that a wisdom tooth is going to cause you a problem at some point, (usually while on vacation or during the holidays). Because we can't predict which wisdom tooth is going to be the problem the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons has performed hundreds of studies that support removing wisdom teeth during young adulthood. Sometimes I myself wonder what would happen if I would have left my wisdom teeth in my mouth. A quick search of wisdom tooth on twitter quickly sends me back to reality, when I see all of these people in such agony for days writing about their wisdom teeth causing pain.

Fundraising Opportunities
The dentists at Libertyville Dental Associates helped set up a team sports fundraiser with the Libertyville, Gurnee, and Grayslake communities of Illinois to provide mouth guards for local sports teams. The unique idea was to give back to the community a service that every athlete could benefit from. This allowed the young athletes to promote their sport to others in a productive and meaningful way, while raising funds to travel for competition. If you would like more information about setting up a mouthguard program and protecting athletes teeth from a dental emergency contact us at
